Charting the passage of time is something we, as humans, need to do. Over the eons, the stars, sun and moon have been the steadfast way of doing just that.

The glowing orb in the nighttime sky, our one and only moon, is one way the ancestors used to gauge time and some religions still use it for the same reason. The Lunar calendar is set around the phases of the moon. Our current, standardized and accepted Calendar is a solar Calendar and its basis is how the earth revolves around the sun.

A Lunar month, known as a Synodic Month or Lunation, takes 29.5 Gregorian days to complete 12 lunar cycles. A synodic month is either 29 or 30 days which make a lunar year 11 days shorter than a solar year. The first day of a lunar year varies by what calendar you are using. A synodic month is a complete moon cycle. There are 12.37 synodic months .

It is said that the Sumerians were the first people to base their year on the moon phases. Their month started on the first day of a visible new moon. They did have to adjust their calendar, which is called intercalation, when it was deemed that the months appeared to be off. Extra days would be added to bring the calendar into alignment. A good example would be our leap year, an extra day added. For the lunar calendar an entire month would sometimes have to be added to keep with the seasons. This is to make up for the fraction of a month (12.37 synodic months).

Back around 380 BC they had to establish rules were regarding the intercalation inclusions which helped standardize the calendar, 7 months were added over a19-year period, which means 7 of the years within that 19 year span has 13 months!

Several religions use a lunar calendar such as the Jewish faith, Hindus, Babylonians, and Greeks. Interestingly, for the Islams, Muhammad forbade the addition of the 13 month so it was adjusted to be 354 days.

A solar calendar revolves around the seasons and the position of the sun relative to the stars.
Our current accepted worldwide calendar is a solar calendar. It is also known as a Gregorian Calendar. There are also “tropical Solar calendars” which have to do with where the sun and the equinox cross. The Gregorian Calendar is a Tropical Solar calendar as is the Bengali Calendar, the Iranian Calendar and the Indian National Calendar.

A solar calendar is based on how long it takes for the earth to revolve around the sun which is generally 365 1/4 days. Adding an additional day every four year, leap year, brings it all back into balance. It was the Egyptians that first developed the solar calendar but they did not account For that 1/4 day and eventually their calendar became wrong and dissolved. In 237 BC an extra day every four years was added by Ptolemy III Euergetes of Egypt in the Decree of Canopus.

There are a slew of cultures that use a Lunisolar calendar which are solar calendars which dates indicate the moon phases. A LuniSolar calendar may also indicate the season if it is a Tropical Calendar. The Lunisolar calendar goes a little more in depth adding moon, star placement and sun position as well as seasons. Some of the traditions that use a Lunisolar calendar are Hebrew, Jain, Buddhist, Hindu, Kurdish, Burmese, Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, Vietnamese, Mongolian, Korean,Hellenic, Coligny and Babylonian.

There are several websites like The Creators Calendar that state that God’s calendar is a Lunar Solar Calendar based on Creation. So today, on our Gregorian Solar Calendar, is October 31, 2018, on a Lunar Solar Calendar it is the 7th day of the 8th month with tomorrow being the Sabbath.

One of the main differences between a Lunar and Solar calendar is of course, the orbital celestial body that it is based on, with the Lunar Calendar based on the moon and the Solar is based on the sun. . The Lunar Month starts at the New Moon, the Solar Calendar measures time it takes for the Earth to move around the sun. Both calendars have to make adjustments by adding days. The Lunar Calendar is shorter than a Solar Calendar by 5 days. A Lunar-Solar Calendar is a hybrid of both the Solar and the Lunar calendar and tries to reconcile the months and years but that can be a challenge. The Lunisolar calendar is what is considered to be God’s Calendar and its based on the fact that every 19 years the Sun and Moon come back to the same positions relative to each other.
