Here it is 5:05 in the morning, I can’t sleep. I am playing around on my tablet with my website and I come across this unfinished draft about sleep. What synchronicity!

I have been awake since 2 am. What woke me up I will never know but going back to sleep proved futile. So after 3 hours of tossing and turning I just gave up, got up, made a pot of coffee and decided today was the day to research and finish this post.

My sleep habits have never been great and insomnia and restless sleeping has always been something that I have battled. As I have grown older, it seems to have gotten worse, adding pain to the equation. I have tried all the fancy beds, from Sleep Comfort, the “what is your sleep number” bed, to memory foam. Many say it’s all about the mattress and personally I love my memory foam mattress but it doesn’t stop all the nightly chit chat that your brain happens to do.

Why does our brain decide it HAS to solve a problem at 3:00am!

So for my own knowledge and for you, here are some tips for a better night sleep.

First off, check the lighting in your bedroom. We sleep better the darker it is, turn off or block out as much ambient light as you can.

Remember those picture frames that would rotate through your photos showing a new one every 30 seconds? I had one in our bedroom on my side of the room. Every time it rotated it changed the ambient light in the room. I was sleeping horribly. It was an article by Dr Mercola that opened my eyes to ambient light and how it effects our sleep. Once I unplugged that gadget my sleep improved!

He had other great ideas like turning off the TV well before bedtime. We don’t sleep with the tv on but I know many people do. Not a good thing for a good night sleep. Actually his advice is to not watch TV before bedtime but that isn’t gonna happen in our home.

Essential Oils

You know I love my essential oils, right? On the night table is a bottle of Vetiver, which is my oil of choice to help calm and relax me as well as shut the dialogue down in my mind. Since I am not fond of the smell of Vetiver it is one I apply to the bottom of my feet.

Other Essential Oils you can try are Lavender, Cedarwood, Bergomot, Ylang Ylang, Sandlewood and Roman Chamomile.

Crystals for sleep

Crystals have a unique vibration so we will be looking at crystals that have a calming and grounding vibration. Remember to cleanse your Crystal and program it for a good night sleep before using

AmethystAmethyst– this is usually top of my list because it is one of the most calming of the crystals. Try placing a piece inside your pillowcase.

Plus it’s readily available and most crystal nuts have at least one piece.

Black Tourmaline– I have a small piece sitting on my night stand (right next to my bottle of Vetiver). Normally thought of as a stone of protection this crystal can also be grounding and calming.

Quartz (Clear) – Clear Quartz is usually the jack of all crystals and if this what you have then use it.

Rose Quartz – this beautiful pink crystal is soothing and full of gentle love.

Selenite– Selenite is a wonderful tool to use for clearing your aura and for protecting your space. Selenite was named after the Greek Moon Goddess Selene. With its translucent whiteness it brings the moon to you in a calm and grounding way.

Unless you are wearing a piece of crystal jewelry specifically for sleep I do recommend removing all jewelry before bedtime. The jewelry you wore during the day to energize may be the culprit that is keeping you awake.

Reiki and your angels

Using Reiki will definitely help quiet the mind, relieve aches and pains, ground you and help relax you for a better nights sleep. Place your hands wherever you feel most comfortable, let Reiki flow and say a prayer allowing your angels to help quiet your mind and help you fall asleep. Sometimes I ask for an angelic lullaby!

I read this article on Reiki Rays called Insomnia and the Reiki Blanket. What a cool idea and one I will most definitely try.

I hope this gives you a few things to try because sleep is so darned important and something most of us struggle with.

Crystals, Essential Oils and Chicken Soup Kick Some Serious Butt!  

Yesterday was an icky day, one of those days when you know you should have stayed home but decided to be a Warrior Goddess and tough it out. It was storming outside and cold. The day before was a really long day and I slept pretty awful so I was really tired and dragging. I had a Reiki appointment first thing in the morning but my day was open for the rest of the day which I was really grateful for. It was my intention to be gentle and kind to myself, straighten up the studio, do some product photography, pet the cats. Easy Peasy stuff. But as the day wore on I got more and more tired and my head started to ache. I was dragin, that is whenever I decided to move.

I started searching for chocolate, a sure sign that I was heading down the wrong path. 

By 3:30, with my head pounding  I knew it was time to call it quits and head home.   When I got home I scrounged around looking for my Blue Lace Agate, a crystal perfect for headaches. The house was quiet so I laid down with the stone on my forehead and immediately fell asleep (or under the spell from the crystal)! 20 minutes later I woke up, a bit dazed, but with my headache considerably better.

But not gone

And I knew it wanted to come back. Not wanting to search high and low for my Essential Oil headache blend I grabbed the first thing I could find that I thought would help, Frankincense. I applied a drop to my forehead and temple. My next thought was food…. I was hungry, yet still cold so some chicken soup sounded good. When Ben came in he asked if I was coming down with a cold because I was stuffy sounding and coughing.

What?   I ain’t got time for that crap.

So out came the OnGuard, which I rolled on my feet. I settled in for some TV watching, curled up on the couch under a blanket, feeling sorry for myself. An hour later (I kid you not) I noticed that I stopped coughing, I stopped sniffling, I wasn’t tired and I wasn’t headachy.

And I am pretty sure I threw some Reiki into that mix as well. Today I feel great, back to work and ready to go. I love all the natural things I have at my disposal to keep me healthy. 12 ways to a stress free holiday season

The Holidays are quickly approaching. Thanksgiving dinner, family get-togethers, cook baking, Christmas Present shopping, decorating the house inside and out, holiday parties.  I think often of the idealistic Christmas portrayed on oldie movies like “White Christmas” but, lets be honest here, the holidays can induce a lot of stress…

And Stress can be bad.

So I comprised a list of things you can do, that takes just a second, to de-stress during this holiday time.

1. Take a walk– I use this one often. Take just a few minutes, bundle up and take a quick and quiet walk around the block.  It will help clear your thoughts, give you some quiet time, and get your blood moving. How about taking your dog with you. He may need some de-stressing as well!

2. Diffuse a relaxing Essential Oil- The oil that first comes to mind is Lavender because it is so soothing and calming. Not only will you relax a little more but so will anyone in the same room.  Burning candles and scented oil pots put loads of poisons and chemicals in the air so I don’t recommend them.

3. Make a list– Sounds simple, doesn’t it but much of our holiday stress is all the “things” we have to remember to do.  Writing them down not only helps you remember them but as you check off the completed items you experience a sense of accomplishment

4. Read an engaging book- Often all we need is a few minutes in someone else’s shoes!!  Take a few minutes, curl up on a favorite chair, under a favorite blanket, sipping your favorite herbal tea and read!!  Doesn’t that sound delightful!

5. Take a bath- Add some Epson salts and a relaxing Essential Oil to your bath, light some candles, close the door and indulge. Grab some headphones and your IPod, listen to some favorite music and block out the sounds of the world around you.

6. Set a gift budget– Often the stress we experience is related to how much money we spend so this year, set a budget on how much you will spend and who you will spend it on. Remember that most of us stress over this so maybe chat with your friends and family and agree NOT to buy gifts for each other. The holidays are more about Love then presents.

7. Do some yoga (or some form of exercise)- Yoga helps stretch, revive and renew you!!  Be gentle. When we stress our muscles tend to get tight and stiff, and not in a good way. Yoga or stretching will help ease them.

8. Meditate- I am not suggesting you sit uncomfortably cross legged for an hour, but just take a few minutes, close your eyes and clear your thoughts. You will be surprised at how more relaxed you will be.

9. Power Nap– If you try the Meditate suggestion above you may end up with a power nap!  Nothing wrong with that.  Just a short (30 minute) nap can do wonders for your day. It will refresh you and give you some renewed energy.

10. Watch a funny Movie – Laughter sometimes is the very best medicine!!!  During the holidays, there are plenty of off the wall, sappy, funny Christmas movies to watch. Give your self a break and watch one!!

11. Say “NO”–  Honey, you are not super woman (or man) so dont take on more than you can chew.  Saying No is perfectly OK.  Taking on too much can result in loads of stress so don’t overfill your plate.

12. Get a massage (or better yet and EssentialTouch)– So you knew this would be on the list but you deserve an hour of someone fussing and pampering over you, don’t you!!

Sept 5- On our way

As I write this I am sitting in a plane on my way to Utah to attend the doTERRA convention as well as visit with Chris and family. Its been awhile since I have gone anywhere, I have never seen Chris’s house and attending this convention could be the deciding factor in my continuing doTERRA as a business.

Yesterday my goal was to just “allow” life. I did very well with it yesterday and am still working on it today as well. It will take some time to make it a habit. Several times I did have to stop and remind myself to just accept what was unfolding and see what happens. I have to say, the day was more peaceful that way.

My “schedule” for yesterday was to keep the gallery open until 11:30am and then close, go to a chamber luncheon, run a few errands and then go home and pack. As soon as the day started I knew that wasnt going to happen when jack hammers started ripping through my sidewalk as they prepared to pour a new one. With all the noise there was no reason to stay so I left, got all my chores done early, packed and then Ben and I got to spend the evening laughing during a Steve Martin movie marathon.

I dont think we woukd have been able to do that had i not just gone with the flow and closed early.

I found some time to relax and laugh with my honey.
